 Wood Fireplace Maintenance Tips

One of the most important steps in maintaining a wood fireplace is to keep it clean from ashes, soot, and other flammable debris. Sometimes tiles or masonry can crack, or strange sounds come from your fireplace. If you’re not familiar with how to properly assess and rectify the situation, consider the help of a professional.

Here are a few tips that you can do today:

  1. Make sure you have a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector in your home. Replace the batteries every year ― choose a memorable day, like New Year’s Day, for an easy reminder.
  2. Avoid putting MDF, wet wood, glossy magazines or colored paper, wax-covered paper, Christmas trees, or painted or treated wood in your fireplace.
  3. Consider eco-friendly logs, which are made from wood chips or other materials, that give off fewer emissions than solid wood. If you’re looking to create less mess, soy or switchgrass logs offer easier cleanup.
  4. Always make sure there are no burning or smoldering embers present when you clean ashes from your wood fireplace.

Gas Fireplace Maintenance Tips

You can clean dirt, dust, or film from your glass front, ceramic or cement logs, or fire glass marbles using a light brush, damp rag, or microfiber cloth and an ammonia-free gas log cleaner, warm water, or distilled white vinegar. A shop vac with a HEPA filter is also a handy tool.

  1. Before you clean your gas fireplace, turn off the gas and make sure your logs are cool.
  2.  If you’re removing the logs, place them on a surface that can capture the debris and be easily thrown away (such as a piece of cardboard).
  3.  Take a photo before you remove them, so you can replace the logs in their proper configuration when you’re done.

Common Fireplace Repair Issues

With a wood-burning fireplace, you may be dealing with airflow or fire hazard issues due to accumulated soot, ashes, or creosote. Sometimes tiles or masonry can crack, or you start to hear certain sounds coming from your fireplace that could very well be a warning sign.

Among the issues that can arise with a gas fireplace are a faulty pilot light, clogged burner, wiring issue, low or no gas flow, or tripped breaker.
