Summertime Fireplace Maintenance

Services for Summertime Fireplace Maintenance

The summer months are a great time to freshen up your fireplace after a long winter’s use. Whether you enjoy doing the work yourself or are looking for a helping hand, there are a few key tasks you should undertake while the weather is amenable and your fireplace is not being used. If, during a safety inspection or general cleaning, you discover a repair or replacement issue, you’ll have plenty of time to order parts and complete the job so that you can enjoy your fireplace when the weather changes.

Contact us at (847) 741-5903 or submit an online request for a call back if you’d like to speak with our service team regarding your particular issue or need. If you’re looking for a part for your fireplace ― such as a glass door, gas or wood fireplace insert, or fireplace cap or vent cover ― take a look at the online offerings from the manufacturers we represent, or visit our large showroom in Elgin.

Clean Your Wood Fireplace & Stove

Following are a few tips and to-dos for the proper maintenance of a wood-burning fireplace or stove:

  1. When removing soot that has accumulated in your firebox, wear a mask and protective goggles to avoid inhaling or blinking in particles that can go airborne when you’re sweeping.
  2. Make sure that the ashes you’re taking out of your fireplace don’t include burning embers that can reignite or start a fire in the receptacle you’ll be placing them in.
  3. If you use a wood-burning stove during the cold weather months, you should already be cleaning it regularly throughout your usage period. In the summertime, you may want to do a hard clean of the interior by sanding down the cast iron surface area ― to remove any hard-to-remove dirt or grime.
  4. Both a wood-burning fireplace and a wood-burning stove should have the chimney swept once or twice a year.

Gas Fireplace Cleaning
& Maintenance

Like a wood-burning fireplace or stove, you’ll want to regularly clean your propane or natural gas fireplace to not only keep you and your family safe but also to ensure that it continues to work efficiently.

Among the tips and to-dos to proper gas fireplace cleaning and maintenance:

  1. Before you begin, turn off the gas valve and let all the fireplace components cool down. Your pilot light should also be turned off. Wait a few minutes for the gas to leave the pipes.
  2. Before you begin, lay down cardboard or other surface protection. This is where you’ll place the items to be cleaned.
  3. A good rule of thumb is to take a picture of the inside of your fireplace before you remove items, so you have an accurate reference when it’s time to reassemble.
  4. Carefully remove the components, such as the glass or mesh coverings and gas logs, and place them on the protective material.
  5. Brush off the gas logs and gas burners where dust, animal hair, and other debris can accumulate over time. You can also use a handheld vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment.
  6. Clean with soap and water or a product made specifically for cleaning gas logs.

Clean Your Fireplace Inserts

A gas fireplace insert is a metal combustion box that is inserted into an existing fireplace structure.  This is a project that you may want to consider having a professional do. Our service team, for example, will carefully remove the insert and clean up any dirt, dust, or debris that has collected behind or around it. We will also check for any issues that may require repair or replacing.
